I am an active duty US Navy orthopaedic surgery resident at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. I am currently in a one year research fellowship with a focus on neuromuscular injury at the cell and molecular level with the goal to ultimately improve medical and surgical treatment. In the Center of Excellence in Orthopaedics laboratory in which I work, the principal team has identified and characterized trauma induced changes resulting from traumatic war wounds to include progenitor cells found at the site of injury and changes in gene expression that occur in neuromusculoskeletal tissue. Given elevated TGF-beta levels in the soft tissue of war-traumatized extremities, our group is investigating the effect of TGF-beta inhibitors in an in vitro model of human heterotopic ossification.
