I have always been interested in our neurological system and how diseases affect both central and peripheral nerve function. In my early research at UVA, I investigated the effects of alcohol and drug use on the central nervous system and novel treatment strategies for addiction by targeting different nerve signaling pathways simultaneously in rat models. In medical school I transitioned this interest into exploring different medical therapies to attenuate damage to neural tissues in traumatic brain injury. Now as an Orthopaedic Surgery resident at a Level 1 Trauma Center, my interests have evolved to include the peripheral nervous system. I frequently care for patients with peripheral nerve injuries and find the current treatment options to have limited efficacy. My recent focuses on understanding the impediments to functional recovery and axonal regeneration following current reconstructive options. I hope to develop novel strategies to augment peripheral nerve rec! onstruction and enhance patient recovery.
