An Investigational Study of the Neurohistopathologic Response Following Epidural Application of a Novel Hemostatic Agent - An In-Vivo Ovine Laminectomy Model
Dr. Ian Duensing started his education at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. After graduating magna cum laude, he continued his medical education at Texas A&M University Health Science Center and Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple, TX. During medical school, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and graduated with honors. He then completed his Orthopaedic residency training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT followed by a fellowship in Hip and Knee Arthroplasty at Duke University. Dr. Duensing is currently employed as an Assistant Professor in Adult Reconstruction at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.
Dr. Duensing’s clinical interests and expertise include complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement, anterior total hip arthroplasty, and robotic assisted surgery. Along with his clinical interests, he is actively involved with research encompassing all aspects of hip and knee replacement, and has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and is involved in several multicenter phase-1 and phase 2 clinical trials. He is passionate about providing excellent clinical care, research, and trainee education. His specific research interests lie in peri-prosthetic joint infection, patient reported outcomes, genetic and familial influences of total joint outcomes, and the integration of arthroplasty machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Greg Gaski is an orthopedic trauma surgeon and serves as the Director of Research for the orthopedic trauma surgery division at Inova Fairfax. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of trauma surgery and orthopedic surgery and teaches residents at national fracture courses annually. Dr. Gaski has served as a principal investigator and site investigator at several local and national research trials studying pelvic ring injuries, the inflammatory response in severely injured trauma patients, blood clot medication, infection prevention, and treatment of severe lower leg injuries.
Dr. Gaski completed his undergraduate studies at Miami University in Oxford, OH, medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, residency at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Center, and fellowship training in orthopedic trauma at the University of Maryland Medical System, Shock Trauma Center.

Does Timing of Acetabular Fracture Fixation Through an Anterior Approach Affect Blood Loss?
Originally from Richmond, Lieutenant Commander Goldman attended the Naval Academy and returned home to MCV for both medical school and residency. He completed a fellowship in Lower Extremity Reconstruction at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and has been stationed at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) for the past five years. He has multiple peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on various revision hip and knee arthroplasty topics. His current research focus is understanding risk factors for total hip and knee complications. He currently serves as Research Director and Vice-Chair of Orthopaedics at the NMCP.

During this time, I have performed thousands of joint replacements, with a particular focus on complex and revision surgery. I have conducted research related to surgical outcomes and factors that affect results of joint replacement and have participated in research investigating the effects of optimum joint balancing using nanosensors. I have been active in the state orthopaedic societies in both Michigan and Virginia and was a founding member of MARCQI. I am the Editor of Arthroplasty Today and serve on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Arthroplasty.

Dr. Gwathmey specializes in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy of the Shoulder, Hip, and Knee. This includes the diagnosis and treatment of athletic injuries and conditions of the shoulder, hip, knee, and foot/ankle. He is a team physician for UVA and James Madison University athletics as well as numerous high school teams. He is also active in medical student and resident education winning numerous teaching awards. He is the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director as well as the Medical Student Clerkship Director. He is also faculty for the prestigious Miller Orthopaedic Review Course. He has over 40 peer-reviewed publications and presented his research at national conferences including the AAOS, AOSSM, and AANA. He has authored 20 book chapters, edited numerous Orthopaedic texts, and rec! ently published a book on Hip Arthroscopy. His research interests include clinical outcomes after shoulder, hip, and knee arthroscopy, biomechanical analysis of the hip and knee joint, and the natural history of femoroacetabular impingement.

Dr. O'Connell is assistant professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at VCU Health System in Richmond VA. His sports medicine practice focuses primarily on complex hip and knee pathology with a special focus in hip arthroscopy and preservation. Prior to arriving in Roanoke, Dr O'Malley was in private practice in Portland, Maine where he served athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels, including Bowdoin College Athletics and the Maine Mariners of the East Coast Hockey League. Currently he serves as team physician for Hidden Valley High School and Ferrum College.
Dr. O'Malley's interests include minimally invasive arthroscopic surgical techniques for complex injuries of the knee, shoulder, and elbow, as well as general fracture care and joint replacement of the shoulder. Particular areas of interest include multiligamentous knee injuries, cartilage injuries with a focus on joint preservation, lower extremity corrective osteotomy, rotator cuff disease, and shoulder instability. He has been involved in numerous journal and textbook publications on several topics in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Emerging Leaders Program, and the Virginia Orthopaedic Society (VOS).

Dr. Patel is an Adult Reconstruction Surgeon and an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at VCU Medical Center. He attended medical school at the University of Birmingham, UK, and completed his Orthopaedic Residency at Imperial College London, UK, during which he earned a master's degree at Bath University, UK. He has completed fellowships in Adult Reconstruction at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Trauma at VCU and Sports Medicine at the Rothman Institute. He is a Fellow and board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery of both The Royal College of Surgeons of England and Canada. Dr. Patel's clinical and research interests include pre-operative optimization, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), return to sport, and knee stiffness. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 75 national/international presentations and 5 book chapters, having established the VCU Adult Reconstruction research meeting with over 40 ongoing projects. After completing her Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Reznicek joined VCU in 2014 and established the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Infectious Diseases Service; providing inpatient and outpatient consults for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. She also created and directs the first Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) team at VCU, providing weekly oversight for 80-100 patients on intravenous antibiotics. Dr. Reznicek has participated in multiple invited seminars locally and regionally. She was the Editor in Chief of a new book titled Clinical Cases in Musculoskeletal Infectious Diseases. She is currently involved in two grants studying antibiotic use in open fractures. Dr. Reznicek has also created the first MSK-ID rotation for Orthopedic Interns and has developed a multi-disciplinary clinic for the management of musculoskeletal infections. She authored the revised “Open Fracture Protocol†and standardized the diagnostic testing for PJIs at VCU. Dr. Reznicek is highly regarded in the VCU community for her expertise in musculoskeletal infections.
Dr. Daniel L. Riddle is the Otto D. Payton Professor of Physical Therapy, Orthopaedic Surgery and Rheumatology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, USA. He received his certificate in physical therapy from The University of Iowa, a master’s degree in orthopedic physical therapy and a doctoral degree with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Riddle’s primary research interests are in the areas of musculoskeletal pain problems and epidemiology, lower extremity osteoarthritis and joint replacement surgery. Dr. Riddle has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed full length publications. He currently serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Pain, and Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. Dr. Riddle’s research efforts have been supported with PI or CoI funding of more than 30 million dollars, by the Veteran’s Administration, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and multiple institutes at the National Institutes of Health.

Amelia Rode is a physician assistant in the Orthopaedic Surgery department at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA. She completed her PA studies at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke. She started her PA career in family medicine in Colorado. She moved back to Virginia and transitioned into the Fracture Liaison Service Coordinator role in February 2020. She is the clinic provider for the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) and Bone Health Clinic at Carilion under the guidance of physician champions Dr. Trevor Owen and Dr. Jonathan Carmouche. She evaluates and manages primary osteoporosis and secondary fracture prevention. She sees patients mainly in an outpatient setting but also rounds on admitted patients twice per week to educate on secondary fracture prevention. She is a member of the Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation and has achieved their introductory and advanced FLS certificates of completion.

Dr. Felix H "Buddy" Savoie is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and Sports Medicine. He has been recognized as an integral member of virtually every respected organization relating to shoulder and elbow surgery, arthroscopy, and sports medicine. Dr. Savoie has held numerous leadership positions and served as President for several organizations including the Arthroscopy Association of North America (2010), American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (2016), Orthopaedic Learning Center (2016), and Louisiana Orthopaedic Association (2016). He is currently the 90th President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Bryan D.Springer completed his medical education at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic and his Fellowship in Adult Reconstruction of the Hip and Knee at the Harvard School of Medicine/Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is currently an attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at the OrthoCarolina Hip and Knee Center in Charlotte, NC, where he serves as Fellowship Director and is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Atrium Musculoskeletal Institute.
He is a recipient of many academic, leadership and professional awards. He is as a member of the Knee Society and the Hip Society. He currently serves as the Chair for the American Joint Replacement Registry (AJRR) and is the 2022 President of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeions (AAHKS). He serves as President and is on the Board of Directors for the International Orthopedic Education Network (IOEN). He was named to the next generation of leaders in total joint replacement in 2013 and in 2008 was a John Insall Travelling Fellow. He is the immediate past chair of the Education Council for AAHKS and was the Program Chair for the 2013 AAHKS annual meeting. He is a past president of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS). He is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Arthroplasty, is assistant editor for Arthroplasty Today. He is co-editor in chief for the Journal of Bone and Joint Infections. He is the co-founder and Medical Director of Operation Walk Carolinas.
He has published over 215 scientific articles in the peer review literature and authored over 25 book chapters. His academic and clinical interests focus on complex primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty as well as management of infected total joint arthroplasty. His clinical practice focuses on primary and revision total joint arthroplasty. He currently is involved with the Orthopaedic industry on implant design for both primary and revision total joint arthroplasty.

Chuck Su is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Virginia and is a team physician for James Madison University athletics. He attended Case Western Reserve University for undergraduate and graduate studies where he completed the combined MD/PhD Medical Scientist Training Program. He then stayed on for orthopaedic residency at Case Western before completing his orthopedic sports fellowship training at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado. He currently specializes in hip, shoulder, and knee surgery and serves as a team physician for James Madison University athletics and Monticello High School.
Dr. Jennifer Vanderbeck is a Board Certified and Fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery. Prior to obtaining her medical degree at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Dr. Vanderbeck received a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Chemistry at Thomas Jefferson University. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency followed by a fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Rothman Institute. Dr. Vanderbeck is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and an oral board examiner for the American Board or Orthopaedic Surgery. She has been elected as an Active Member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons where she recently served two terms as Secretary/Treasurer on the society’s finance committee. Dr. Vanderbeck is currently practicing academic medicine as an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at VCU Health in Richmond, VA. She holds the role of Orthopaedic Medical Director for VCU Health’s Short Pump Pavilion ambulatory clinic and serves as Chair of the Orthopaedic Clinical Operations Committee.
Outpatient Total Knee Arthroplasty Performed at an Ambulatory Surgery Center vs Hospital Outpatient Setting: Complications, Revisions, and Readmissions
Dr. Yarboro has been a faculty member and member of the orthopaedic trauma division at UVA since 2012. He completed trauma fellowships in Germany and UNC Chapel Hill. Distal femur fractures, including periprosthetic fractures, are a challenging clinical problem that is a regular part of his trauma practice. He has worked with the Center for Applied Biomechanics at UVA to investigate the fracture healing environment in order to optimize outcomes following distal femur fracture fixation.
Dr. Zielinski earned her medical degree at Wayne State University and completed her internship and residency at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. She completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Orlando Health - Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.
Dr. Zielinski joined Carilion Clinic in 2016 as a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and board certified in orthopaedic surgery and pediatric orthopaedic surgery. She is assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
She enjoys hiking, mission trips, and travel.
