Peter J. Apel, MD, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Tech Carilion in Roanoke, VA. Dr. Apel is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and is fellowship trained in both pediatric orthopaedics and hand surgery. He holds an additional certificate of qualification (CAQ) in Surgery of the Hand. His PhD is in Neuroscience (Peripheral nerve injury and regeneration). Dr. Apel has a busy clinical practice of adult and pediatric hand & elbow surgery. This includes surgery of the brachial plexus, peripheral nerves and microvascular surgery. Greater than 95% of his case volume is hand, elbow, brachial plexus, peripheral nerve and microvascular surgery. Dr. Apel performs major limb reconstruction, including nerve repairs, nerve grafting and complex tendon transfers.
Orthopedic oncologist at VCUHS since 2006 and UVA since 2010. Program Director for 50 residents, educator for 165 residents. Modern man and father of 2 daughters.
Dr Gibson is the 1VP of the AAOS. He has over a decade of leadership in the AAOS having served as the Chair of the Councilors, Advocacy Council Chair, the PAC Executive Committee, and Board of Directors and now the Presidential Line. He is a partner at Atlantic Orthopaedic Specialists.
External Fixation Pin Site Overlap with Internal Fixation in Closed Tibial Plateau Fractures: Does it Increase the Risk of Postoperative Surgical Site Infections?
I am a 72-year-old fellowship trained orthopedic hand surgeon in practice in Roanoke, Virginia since 1987. Originally a member of the Roanoke Orthopedic Center, I have, with my former private practice partners, been a member of the Carilion Clinic since 2010. I have been interested in the safety and efficiency of common outpatient hand surgery procedures since coming to Roanoke and with my partners have developed a successful model for use of an office-based treatment room using only local anesthetics.
Dr. Korin Hudson is a Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and currently VP- Event and Clinical Operations, Physician Lead for the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Dr. Hudson completed both her medical degree and residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Virginia, followed by a fellowship in Primary Care Sports medicine at Georgetown University and MedStar Health in Washington, DC, where she has been on faculty since 2006 and where she has been a member of the Ethics Committee since 2010.
Dr. Hudson has been Team Physician for Georgetown University Athletics, the Washington Wizards, and the Washington Mystics, and a Consulting Physician for the Washington Capitals, and the Maryland Jockey Club. She has a particular interest in emergency action planning and emergency preparedness as it relates to athletic endurance events and mass gathering venues as well as ethical decision making in sports medicine.
Jonathan Isaacs is the Herman and Vera Nachman Distinguished Research Professor and Chief of the Division of Hand Surgery, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (with co-academic appointments in Plastic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering). Having completed both medical school and Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at VCU, Dr. Isaacs obtained additional training in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at Duke University Medical Center before joining the VCU faculty in 2002. His medical practice includes hand, wrist, and peripheral nerve reconstruction. As an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Society for Peripheral Nerve, and the American Association for Hand Surgery, he has served on several national committees and executive boards. Notably, he is the nerve editor for Hand.e, an Associate Editor for HAND, and is on the editorial boards for the Journal of Hand Surgery, and Orthoplastic Surgery.
Mr. Jaicks is currently doing a research year at the Anderson Orthopaedic Research Institute. He graduated from MIT with a degree in biological engineering. He then completed a masters in Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University before starting medical school there. At the end of this year, he will be returning to Georgetown University School of Medicine to complete his 4th year of medical school.

Incidence and Reasons for Direct Transfers Among Hip and Knee Arthroplasties Performed at Ambulatory Surgical Centers
I completed a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Cleveland Clinic in 2014. Since fellowship, I have been using orthobiologics for a myriad of non-operative orthopaedic indications. Given the seemingly constant evolution of the field of orthobiologics, this presentation aims to review the available products, as well as the available evidence for their use within the field of orthopaedics.
Originally from California, Dr. Owen received his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his internship and residency at Ochsner Healthcare System, also in New Orleans. After completing a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at Harvard Medical School and clerkship at the International Center for Limb Lengthening in Baltimore, he settled in Roanoke Virginia where his is now Associate Professor at Virginia Tech Carilion Medical School where he specializes in Hip Arthroplasty, Orthopaedic Trauma, and limb reconstruction.

Dr. Ross received his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College (2005), majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Medicine where he received his MD (2010). He completed his internship and residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital from 2010-2015. He attended the University of Utah for fellowship training in adult reconstruction and hip preservation in 2015-2016. Dr. Ross is passionate about teaching and this led him to pursue a career in academic medicine. His first faculty appointment was as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Massachusetts. He joined the faculty at VCU in 2018 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. His clinical practice focuses on hip and knee replacement with an additional focus on young adult hip preservation surgery including periacetabular osteotomy and surgical dislocation of the hip.

Lisa is a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA. She is also Chief Well-Being officer of Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. She considers it her greatest privilege to care for those who care for others. She has abundant energy for improving the professional experience of her colleagues. She considers herself very fortunate to practice her passions in such a great academic health center in this beautiful area of the country. On a personal note, Lisa has three teenage children, loves to travel, and finds rejuvenation in nature. She quiets her mind on her yoga mat, and her favorite place in the world is her bed. She is honored to join her orthopedic colleagues in a conversation about well-being at the Virginia Orthopaedic Society’s Annual Meeting!
Ward graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill (75) and from Duke Medical School (78) followed by a 1/2 year Pediatrics internship (Tulane), a full year surgical internship (Emory) and a 4 year stint as an ED doctor. Duke orthopedic residency, Cleveland Clinic sports fellowship and an orthopedic oncology fellowship at UCLA followed. Returning to NC, he founded and ran the Orthopaedic Oncology program at Wake Forest, earning full professor rank. After 22+ years on the faculty and over 100 scholarly publications, he became Chief of Orthopedics at Guthrie Clinic in PA and NY. Due to family needs (handicapped child) Ward returned to NC, founding a new orthopedic group with Novant Health until initial retirement in July 2024. He resumed part-time practice with FryeCare Orthopedics in Hickory, NC in February, 2025. He has performed over 6500 orthopedic oncology surgeries and is a Past President of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS).
Dr. Yarboro has been a faculty member and member of the orthopaedic trauma division at UVA since 2012. He completed trauma fellowships in Germany and UNC Chapel Hill. Distal femur fractures, including periprosthetic fractures, are a challenging clinical problem that is a regular part of his trauma practice. He has worked with the Center for Applied Biomechanics at UVA to investigate the fracture healing environment in order to optimize outcomes following distal femur fracture fixation.

Dr. Zielinski earned her medical degree at Wayne State University and completed her internship and residency at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, Michigan. She completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Orlando Health - Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Dr. Zielinski relocated to Roanoke in 2016 from Chattanooga, TN (Erlanger Hosp) to join Carilion Clinic as a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon and is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and pediatric orthopaedic surgery. She is assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.
