It is with great pleasure that we invite you to the May 1-2, 1999 Annual Meeting of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society to be held at the Williamsburg Marriott (next to Kingsmill) in Williamsburg, Virginia.
We are fortunate to have as our guest speakers Robert Cofield, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedics at the Mayo Clinic, and Robert Moffitt, Director of Health Policy at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC.
The program format has been changed to a two-day session. We will maintain the tradition of an interesting and informative meeting highlighting academics but also including political and economic issues regarding the practice of orthopaedics as we enter the millennium.
Scientific papers will be presented during the two half-day sessions (Saturday and Sunday). Abstracts are now being accepted for inclusion in the program. The Society will again be presenting a $500 cash award for the best resident paper. We ask department chairmen to please make copies of this letter and the enclosed abstract cover sheet and encourage your residents to present at the meeting.

GUEST SPEAKERS
Robert H. Cofield, M.D. is Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His professional interests focus on adult reconstructive surgery and surgery of the shoulder. Dr. Cofield is a founding member and past president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and an honorary founding member of the South African Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. Dr. Cofield previously was Dean of the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He has served the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in many capacities.
Robert Moffitt, Ph.D. is the Director of Domestic Policy at the Heritage Foundation in Washington D.C. Dr. Moffitt has over 17 years or professional experience in Washington, working on Capitol Hill, the Executive Branch and the private sector. He served in President Regan's administration where he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Legislation at the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Congressman Ed Whitfield is US Representative to First District, Kentucky. He serves on the US Commerce Committee and several subcommittees.
Rem Dickenson serves as Health Policy Aide to Senator John Warner in Washington, D.C.
Mike Jurgensen is Director of Health Policy for the Medical Society of Virginia. The Medical Society of Virginia is the largest physician organization in the state and is recognized as a leading force in promoting medical legislation and policies on behalf of the citizens and physicians of Virginia.
