NPs and PAs

Happy New Year!

I'm sure everyone is ready for an exciting 2008!  Please start your year by marking the dates, May 2- May 4 for the VOS 75th Anniversary and 61st Annual Meeting at Wintergreen Resort.  Your Board and Program Chairman are putting the final touches on an exciting and productive meeting.  We have a completed program, confirmation of invited speakers and continuing medical education approval in place.  Program chairman, Doug Boardman, and his co-chair, Mark Willis, have assembled top notch faculty in shoulder and elbow, trauma and adult reconstruction. We are honored to have keynote speakers Joseph Iannotti, MD, PhD, Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery, Cleveland Clinic and Thomas S. Thornhill, MD, Head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School.  Please, join me in warmly welcoming these speakers!

Recently, your VOS Board of Directors met in Richmond on December 8, 2007.  I am pleased to announce we have gained 13 new physician members since initiating our group billing practice.  We will now focus on some of the smaller and mid-size groups.  This allows us to bring in new orthopaedic surgeons as they join our communities in Virginia and renew our current, valued members each year.  There is also a group renewal discount!  Have your administrator contact Joye Stewart, Membership Manager (804-565-6311) to start this practice with your group.  We have also gained seven new physician assistant members since opening our membership to physician assistants and nurse practitioners working with VOS members.  Please, join me in welcoming these new members and remember to share this information with your physician assistants and nurse practitioners!  Currently, our budget is the best it has ever been in my recollection, and I would like to thank all of our loyal members and industry sponsors.  Please remember to thank your exhibitors and visit them during the Annual Meeting.   We are in the process of planning our 2009 meeting in Virginia Beach and 2010 meeting in the Washington D.C. area.  Your continued support and attendance at these upcoming meetings is critical.  We continue to work with the Medical Society of Virginia and our VOS Legislative Assistant, Cal Whitehead, in addressing issues of importance to Virginia orthopaedic surgeons.  We are pleased with our efforts in 2007 and are unaware of any threats on the horizon for 2008.  I assure you we will maintain our vigilance.  Please, continue your support of our ORTHO-PAC.  We are still far behind the Virginia Podiatric and Virginia Chiropractic Associations in available funds. This is a good year to build the war chest for the future!   We will recognize our Legislator of the Year and present our Virginia Career Award during the Annual Meeting.  Please join us at Wintergreen Resort to honor these individuals!

In summary, I would like to thank the Board, Program Chair and Co-chair, Executive Director and Administrator from Ruggles, our Legislative Assistant, Cal Whitehead, as well as our members, industry sponsors and exhibitors for being a tremendous support this past year!  I would like to challenge all members to bring at least one more member into Virginia Orthopaedic Society in 2008.  Our Society represents all orthopaedic surgeons in Virginia, but only half of those practicing in the state are members!   Each of us bringing one more member into the Society would correct this and double our voice in Richmond!
