President's Message

By Derek H. Ochiai, MD
President, Virginia Orthopaedic Society

Dear Virginia Orthopaedic Society Members,

In keeping with a year of unusual tumultuous weather, we skipped winter completely this year.  The climate is also uncertain for health care reform, as the Supreme Court has heard arguments pro and con.

On a state level, VOS is engaged in maintaining the quality of our worker’s compensation care, participating in task force meetings to ensure fair compensation and access.

Our political strength derives from our membership.  Please, engage your partners or colleagues, and ask if they are members.  We are the state voice of orthopaedic surgeons, and our voice grows louder with even more members!  Our yearly annual meeting is promising to be fantastic.  Colonial Williamsburg offers educational and fun events for the whole family.  Drs. Nicole Deal, Andrew Wolff and Sara Rynders, PA-C, have put together a stimulating program for both orthopaedic surgeons and physician assistants.  I again make the reminder that PAs are eligible for membership in VOS; if you attend, think about bringing your physician assistants along.  CME credits are available.

ORTHO-PAC is the vehicle that helps VOS fight for issues important to us all; in this day and age, it may be the best investment going for Virginia’s orthopaedic surgeons.  Cal Whitehead is our lobbyist is Richmond, and tirelessly works to advance the common interests our society and medicine in general.   His effectiveness relies on ORTHO-PAC.  Please join the entire VOS Board in supporting ORTHO-PAC. I continue to be amazed at the dedication of the staff and board of VOS; it has been a pleasure and honor to serve with them.  I hope to see you all in Williamsburg!
