MSV President's Update

VOS Members Wear Their White Coats

By Russell Libby, MD, FAAP
President, Medical Society of Virginia

On January 31, 2013, the Virginia Orthopaedic Society (VOS) had its White Coats on Call Day at the General Assembly. The VOS team collaborated with Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) physicians and staff to speak with legislators on important healthcare issues including workers’ compensation, Medicaid and liability reforms.

With healthcare changing around us, it is important to make sure that physicians have a voice in healthcare policy development.  MSV sponsors White Coats on Call Day every year to give MSV districts and specialty societies like VOS the opportunity to learn about the issues and demonstrate to legislators that physicians are working together to improve healthcare for Virginians. The briefing and talking points MSV provides in the morning really help set the stage for successful advocacy on behalf of our patients and profession.

If you haven’t already experienced a White Coat day, I encourage you to join MSV’s day next year so you can be more connected to your physician colleagues. Another way to get involved is to attend MSV’s Legislative Summit, which will be held on May 3 at MSV headquarters in Richmond. I hope you will find out how easy it can be to provide your input and how much we can learn from each other. I hope you will also see how much information we can share with our elected representatives with your unique perspective on healthcare issues that they don’t get elsewhere.

This is a time when so much is happening in healthcare, and physicians need to be out front leading the process. It is critical that we share our knowledge and experience and find ways to work together. Your opinions matter and you can make a difference.
