What’s New at UVA Orthopaedics?

The University of Virginia was ranked the No. 2 best public university in 2015 by U.S. News & World Report and has held the No. 1 or 2 spot since the rankings began in 1998. In 2015, Forbes Magazine again ranked UVA the second best state university in the United States. Of its top schools, the Darden School of Business is ranked No. 2 in the world by The Economist, the McIntire School of Commerce is ranked the second best undergraduate school of business in the United States by Bloomberg Business Week and U.S. News & World Report ranks the School of Law eighth in the country. Design Intelligence’s 2015 rankings place UVA’s graduate architecture programs among the top 10 nationally and among the top three public universities.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine has a strong medical school ranking for both research (#28) and primary care (#25), as well as a stated commitment to public service. Training at the UVA School of Medicine is centered on the Next Generation Cells to Society Curriculum, or NxGen, which combines the training of basic and clinical sciences.
University of Virginia Health Systems received high honors from U.S. News & World Report in its 2015-2016 “Best Hospitals” guide. Four specialties – Orthopaedics, cancer, nephrology, and neurology and neurosurgery – ranked among the top 25 percent of hospitals. The diabetes and endocrinology program is tied for 39th, putting UVA among the top three percent of hospitals in the country with a nationally ranked program.
National healthcare publication “Becker’s Hospital Review” recognized the University Medical Center’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as one of the “100 hospitals with great orthopaedic programs 2015.” The review stated that " UVA Medical Center offers a range of orthopaedic services from total hip and knee replacements to bone cancer treatment to finger implants. UVA Medical Center, which was listed by CareChex as a 2016 top hospital in America for orthopaedic surgery, has a pediatric orthopaedic clinic, a spine center, a musculoskeletal center and a sports medicine clinic. Outfitted with a Level I trauma center, the hospital takes on complex orthopaedic cases and its hand center is one-of-a-kind in Virginia, offering the most comprehensive hand and upper extremity care in the region."
In year 2015, 13 of the 28 faculty members in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery were honored as "Best Doctors in America". These world renowned surgeons strive to provide state-of-the-art, comprehensive but cost effective care for all musculoskeletal disorders, achieving the best outcome for every patient.
UVA ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY
The Department continues to provide quality graduate orthopaedic education through a structured innovative teaching and evaluation process, training and nurturing the next generation of orthopaedic physicians. It draws the best applicants cross the country to come for a robust residency program and eight ACGME accredited fellowship positions.

The Department's research endeavor continues to make significant advances in musculoskeletal scientific knowledge and clinical practice through collaborative basic science, translational, and clinical research, especially since hiring three new research directors: Drs. George Christ, Joseph Hart and Shawn Russell. In year 2015, the Department published 110 peer reviewed articles, 35 textbooks/chapters, and gave 113 national/international presentations. The research program is currently conducting 18 funded clinical trials with research funding of $2.2 million. Translational research is funded through NIH and DOD, as well as Foundation grants totaling $4.5 million. |
