VOS 69th Annual Meeting Recap

101_2695

By Bradley T. Butkovich, MD

Conference Program Director

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all the members of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society, we cordially thank everyone that attended the 69th Annual Meeting at the historic Williamsburg Lodge and Inn in Colonial Williamsburg!  Once again, the Virginia Orthopaedic Society Annual Meeting was a great success! Williamsburg was gorgeous and welcomed members, families and speakers for the weekend with sunny warm days and cool comfortable evenings to learn, socialize and have fun. The Williamsburg Inn and Lodge in Colonial Williamsburg was a fantastic venue, and those that attended agreed that the program, events and extracurricular activities were some of the best in years. Our first ever digital poster sessions were well attended and informative and earned all who attended additional CME credits! In fact, we were able to provide the most CME credits ever for our Annual Meeting at 11.75 CME. Our Saturday lunch with exhibitors had the added benefit of a contribution from Williamsburg AleWerks. Attendees and exhibitors alike thoroughly enjoyed the chance to enjoy the offerings from the brewery, socialize and visit extensively with the vendors that make our meeting possible. Those that contributed to the Ortho-PAC were treated to a wine reception hosted by Dr. T.K. Miller, VOS President.  A good time was had by all!

We were honored to have Dr. James Andrews, renowned Sports Medicine Physician and Founder of the prestigious Andrews Fellowship, as well as Team Physician for the 2016 National Championship Alabama Crimson Tide, serve as our keynote speaker. He addressed the topic of Injury Prevention in Young Athletes and the evolution of care in a symposium, a topic which is near and dear to him at this point in his career. Our second keynote speaker, Dr. Gerald Williams, President of the AAOS, attended and presented a very informative talk on the current state and scope of orthopaedics today. The focus of the meeting explored various current areas of interest applicable to surgeons across the state of Virginia in general practice. These included a symposium on Rotator Cuff Rehabilitation, Regional Anesthesia and Multimodal Pain Control, general updates to common oncology, upper extremity, pediatric and foot and ankle topics seen in most orthopaedic practices. The meeting finished with topics in sideline sports medicine and the anterior approach and hip revision. Furthermore, we had a fantastic scope of research that was presented this year in Williamsburg, which showcases how we as orthopaedists in Virginia remain at the forefront of our profession in academics with life-long learning and the pursuit of knowledge. Finally, the Physician Assistant Breakout Session was a success and provided a great venue for our orthopaedic PA's to meet, learn and socialize.

Please make plans to attend next year in Charlottesville where the meeting will be held at The Boar's Head Inn April 21-23. Once again, we thank everyone for their support of this year’s meeting and hope to continue to bring the best of what Virginia orthopaedists have to offer to our membership and beyond.

Physician Assistant
Breakout Session Recap

By Andrea Herbert, PA-C

The PA Breakout Session at the 2016 meeting covered a great variety of general orthopaedic topics. PA's had an excellent opportunity to ask specific questions that applied to mid-level service. This year there was also the unique opportunity to get hands-on application of orthopaedic devices.  I would like to thank Dr. Mike Wolfe, Dr. Mark Kasmer, Dr. Winston Gwathmey, Dr. John Mann and Virginia Prosthetics for making this year’s Physician Assistant Break Out Session so successful!
