The VCU Department of Orthopaedics is happy to announce the addition of Dr. Alexander Vap to the sports medicine division. Alex joined us on December 1, 2016. He will be seeing patients at the NOW location and also adding a sports presence to the VA Hospital. Alex recently completed his fellowship at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. The sports division has also added Richard Bland College to the number of collegiate programs through which we provide medical services.

Research continues to be a renewed area of focus under the leadership of Dr. Stephen Kates. While many of the faculty have published on a routine basis, we are extremely proud of three of our residents in particular who were awarded research grants this past year – Ankit Bansal (OTA), Robert O’Connell (AO), and Eric Hansen (Synthes).

We unfortunately will be saying goodbye to Dr. William Jiranek. Bill has been a valued member of our department for many years. He will be joining the faculty at Duke University in April. We wish him all the best.
