Dr. Jeffrey Lynn Hanway
August 12, 1961 — March 9, 2018
Dr. Jeffrey Lynn Hanway, dearly beloved husband, father, son, friend, doctor, community member, coach, cyclist and lover of Christ was taken suddenly March 9, 2018.
Jeff was born in Nampa, Idaho on August 12, 1961, to Jack and Yvonne Hanway. Jeff graduated valedictorian and a two-sport varsity athlete from Northwest Nazarene College. He moved east to attend Harvard Medical School, where he was elected by peers as Class Marshal. He trained in orthopedic surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC, where he met and later married his wife Elizabeth (Libby) Higgs. Jeff, whom children adored, went on to do a pediatric orthopedic fellowship at Texas Scottish Rite, in Dallas Texas. Jeff also graduated from the Darden Executive Program at the University of Virginia and is a proud Hoo.
Jeff was a talented pediatric orthopedic surgeon who cared for children in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia for 24 years. His career connected him with other surgeons and patients around the country and his expertise helped advance the knowledge and treatment of orthopedic problems in children. He was the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs of the Children’s National Medical Center Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and Chief Surgical Officer at Pediatric Specialists of Virginia. But he was best known for his smile and easy going attention that put his patients and their families at ease knowing they were receiving the best care.
Jeff adored and was adored by his four children, Sasha, Tori, Christian, and Sophia Hanway, and by his wife. He lived for others. Jeff never missed an opportunity to support his children. He attended each game, track meet, and theatre production with fervent enthusiasm and love. Aside from being a talented and caring doctor, he loved cycling, soccer, and the outdoors. He was a lifelong learner and reader, a passion he passed on to his children. He was happiest when he shared his passions with those he loved.
Jeff is survived and missed by his wife, his four children, his parents, his siblings Greg Hanway and Shelly Hanway-Murphy, and his brother and sister-in-law Geoff and Diana Higgs.
