With spring around the corner, an anticipated topic of conversation is the upcoming bike season. What started out as a small group, a hobby for two or three, has developed into a residency-wide event. Saturday mornings, if not on call, an open-invitation stands for the weekly ride. Clip ins and jerseys or pedals and gym shorts, all are invited and encouraged to participate. The only rule: it’s a no drop-ride. This means that no one gets left behind, in line with our residency team-based culture.
It is often said that medicine attracts some of the most well-rounded individuals, but ironically, the time constraints of the profession can leave previously coveted extra-curricular activities as hobbies of the past. In a time in medicine where physician well-being is a prominent topic of conversation, an effort has been made to maintain residency-wide hobbies and shared activities.
The residency bike ride is a unique time for residents and attendings alike to step away from their traditional hospital roles, and enjoy the Virginia country-side together. It is in sharing not only the mundane of every-day life, but in keeping hobbies that we have the opportunity to further develop and maintain friendships and lasting memories.
So, as we hit the pavement, and sometimes inadvertently a rocky off-road patch, in this upcoming bike season, we look forward to a fun way to see and make new friends while staying active. If you’re ever passing through town, feel free to join; there is a pace for everyone in our no-drop ride.
