In the second edition of the Annual VOS Quiz Bowl, VCU aimed to defend their title while UVA sought vindication after their dramatic collapse from 2017. However, newcomer Navy hoped to break up the party and take the trophy back to Portsmouth.
Moderated by the notorious Dr. Mike Wolfe, this year's match featured two rounds covering a variety of topics essential to the orthopaedic resident ranging from foot bunions to movie quotes. The teams were evenly matched well into a second round, highlighted by the Navy team proudly quoting "Apocalypse Now" to earn $1000. As the second round continued, UVA built a sizeable lead that they would not relinquish despite missing the final jeopardy question for the second straight year. Apparently, osteoblast differentiation transcription factors are not as important to UVA as "Dumb and Dumber" quotes. Nonetheless, the UVA team consisting of PGY4 Evan Carstensen, and PGY3's Aaron Casp and Michael Hadeed, were able to hold on for the win and will take the VOS Quiz Bowl Trophy back to Charlottesville.
Congratulations to all of the competitors for a hard-fought battle. We look forward to seeing the teams that these three illustrious programs will send to our nation's capital for the 2019 Quiz Bowl.
