Miller Receives USU Alumni Military Medical Service Award

Mark Miller, MDPlease join us in congratulating, Mark Miller, MD, S. Ward Casscells Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, for being recognized by the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences Alumni Association with the Medical Service Award. Dr. Miller is a retired colonel in the Medical Corps in the United States Air Force.

According to the citation, Miller received this honor "for outstanding meritorious service and recognition to military medicine through an exemplary career in leadership, warfighter medical care and contributions to military health."

"It is always an honor to be recognized by the institution from which you graduated," says Miller. "The Uniformed Services University is the Military Academy of medical schools and graduates have devoted their careers to care for those who serve. I am humbled to be among them and honored to serve our military and civilian community at the University of Virginia and beyond."

Miller's award outlines how he is a role model for military surgeons – both as a researcher and an educator, having edited 32 textbooks, published more than 170 peer-reviewed articles and written more than 140 textbook chapters on orthopaedics. As a resident, he saw the need for a concise compendium of orthopaedic information, which motivated him to author Miller's Review of Orthopaedics, now in its 7th edition. Miller directs a board prep course for othopaedic surgeons, chairs (or chaired) numerous national and international conferences, served on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine for 14 years, is the Consulting Editor for Clinics in Sports Medicine and serves on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Leon Morres, Col. (Ret.), MC, President of the USUHS Alumni Association, says that Dr. Miller "represents the extraordinary vision of leadership, dedication, service and commitment to military medicine that was embraced by the founders of the Uniformed Services University."

Congratulations Dr. Miller and thank you for your service.
