AAOS Board of Councilors Fall Meeting Report

This year’s meeting was held in virtual format instead of visiting Washington, DC, so we were not able to go on Capitol Hill and meet with our representatives. Instead, there were virtual Town Halls and In-district webinars over the last few months to address hot topic legislation, including the potential cuts brought on by the proposed 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule, medical liability reform, prior authorization reform and lifting restrictions on physician-owned hospitals. VOS was involved with an in-district webinar to Rep. Riggleman’s office, where residents presented the opinions and VOS members provided background information and support.
The Fall Meeting opened with discussion of the Strategic Plan that was developed a few years ago:

Core Values: Leading to serve - Shaping the future - Excellence together
The Fall meeting is also time to address bylaws amendments, advisory opinions, and resolutions that will be presented to the full body at the Annual Meeting for final vote. There was one Amendment presented and passed to adjust the AAOS dues billing cycle starting 2022. This will align better with other calendars and prevent nonpaying members from receiving benefits for almost another full year after not paying. There was one Advisory Opinion that was presented and passed to support the establishment of a pediatric specific review process at the FDA.
There were seven Proposals presented and all were passed. One proposal was introduced by VOS member Mark Miller, MD, titled “Unity of the AAOS and Specialty Societies” for transparency between specialty societies and BOS. The other proposals addressed board member removal policy, board transparency, BOC-BOS AAOS board seats and other governance principles.
Special congratulations to our management group, Ruggles, as they manage the Louisiana Orthopaedic Association that was awarded State Society of the Year. Last year VOS received that award.
